how to know if you are going in the right direction?

I love this photograph because it reminds me of how beautiful going in the "wrong" direction can sometimes be.
i was traveling to visit a friend on a road trip from colorado to portland, oregon and beyond. I shall not soon forget this trip (haven't yet - it was the brand new year of 2004 and with me I had my brand new, very first for me, digital camera). I had driven all night and in the very early morning I had stopped for gasoline somewhere in Idaho. When I got back on the interstate highway it took me awhile to realize that I was headed east instead of my intended west. it slowly "dawned" on me that I was driving into the sunrise and in my tired brain it took some long time to remember that the sun rises in the east and sets so beautifully over the pacific, where I was headed. when I pulled off at the next exit, this photograph is what I saw. I wasn't a master of digital photography and this beautiful vista is not done justice in the photo, but I do love it anyway. it reminds me that when I find I have been headed the "wrong" way for a little while, it might be that the turn around will be quite stunning and worthwhile.
(wow - I should get up early in the morning more often -- I tried, but couldn't articulate those thoughts late last night. amazing what a good night's sleep can do for a brain.)
