What a pleasure it is going to be to listen to this intelligent, thoughtful, kind, decent person speak for the next four, dare I say eight, years.  Below is the transcript of the speech from Grant Park last night.  I've listened and typed and listened and typed some more and listened again to make sure I'd gotten it right.  The bold parts are the parts that spoke most to me. Which parts speak to you?? This person makes me want to be the best person I can be, makes me want to grow and stretch beyond my own self imposed limits, makes me want to work hard and make a difference, helps me believe that the future is a place I want to stick around to see, helps me believe that I CAN make a difference and this election has shown that we all CAN make a difference by working together!!  Thank you every single one who helped make this happen!!  And to anyone who is disappointed today, by our collective choice of the next President --- since you didn't beat us, why not join us in working together to make this country, this planet, a wonderful place to be?  Let's get busy making peace, being peace, creating those new, clean, sustainable energy jobs, giving our young people and not so young people opportunities for higher education and making sure everyone can have access to quality health care and fresh food, and clean air and water!!  Let's lift each other up, every one.  We CAN do it!! 


Transcript of Barack Obama's speech:  November 4th, 2008, Grant Park, Chicago, USA, Earth:   

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Senator McCain.  Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine.  We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him. I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they've achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

and I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. 

Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. 

and while she's no longer with us, I know my Grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am.  I miss them tonight.  I know that my debt to them is beyond measure.  To my sister, Mya, my sister, Amma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me.  I am grateful to them. 

To my campaign manager, David Plouffe, the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best, the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America; to my chief strategist, David Alexrod, whose been a partner with me every step of the way; to the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics; you made this happen and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done. 

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.  It belongs to you.  I was never the likeliest candidate for this office.  We didn't start with much money or many endorsements.  Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington.  It began in the backyards of Des Moines, in the living rooms of Condon(?), on the front porches of Charleston.  It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to the cause.  It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy, who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.  It grew strength from the not so young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from the earth.  This is your victory. 

Now I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me.  You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.  For even as we celebrate tonight we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime: two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.  Even as we stand here tonight we know there are brave Americans waking up in deserts of Iraq, in the mountains of Afganistan to risk their lives for us.  There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors bills or save enough for their child's college education.  There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build and threats to meet, alliances to repair. 

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.  I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.  And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change.  And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.  It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people.

Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.  Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity. Those are values that we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.  As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection."  And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear the world down - we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security - we support you.  And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.  That's the true genius of America, that America can change.  Our union can be perfected and what we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

bird song, sunshine and fresh air are the best, best, best.  for awakening from physical or other kinds of sleep. 

I also like music, light, love, warmth, laughter, meditation, yoga, sensual sex, a shower, a bath, a breath of fresh air carried on a breeze or a hike at dawn.  for awakening from physical and other kinds of sleep. 

and sometimes I like to awaken just because I've slept enough and for no other reason than it's a new day and I'm ready for it.  :-)

these things are bringing me to tears of joy.  because when we hold on and when we keep our eyes on the prize and when we sing "yes we can" together and when we hold on some more together and keep looking to where we want to go together and working for it together and playing for it togehter and living for it and loving for it and breathing it and being it......   we get there and then we get to do it again and go higher and deeper and even sleep for awhile and then wake up and sing "it's a new day" again!!! 




I'm awake and feelin' good tonight (my night off), thanks to some yoga, some meditation, some sensual sex, a breath of fresh air, a shower, some love, some warmth, some music, some art, some poetry and some laughter -- not necessarily in that order.  thank you life!!  thank you all ya'll who inspire me everyday!!  (heck -- I'm crying and laughing at the same time again!)

ps-- I'm going to file my taxes now.  I haven't done that for 4 years-- mental block about bush admin and war and environmental destruction and ........    pray for me.  lol!  I'm going to imagine that the dollars I pay in fines and penalties will go to a good cause like a school, protecting a river, making coal plants cleaner than they are, or investing in clean energy and transportation or even for health care for all.  I know I've been very bad, but I have actually been paying taxes out of my paycheck I just haven't filed any returns.  maybe I'll get lucky??  ha!  I'm not allowing myself another blog post until they are filed.  good motivation to just get it done.  signing off now.  don't forget me.  xoxo -d

what makes us deeply content; deeply happy??  a clear sky at night filled with stars and no light pollution is one thing, no?  a finished project that was done well? 

I have been reading a lot, cocooning, isolating myself a little, trying to discipline myself, sleeping too much anyway and dreaming strange and vivid dreams.  I have been having an existential meltdown, living for a few days in a twilight zone of thought stew of my own making with a dash of seasoning from the world "out there". 

I have been wondering HOW BEST to:

a) learn how to put up solar panels and wind turbines

b) learn how to make solar panels and wind turbines from scratch, like bread or pudding

c) learn how to convert old gasoline powered cars and trucks to electric ones and then get them a solar, wind or micro-hydro power source to recharge their batteries

d) fund my dreams of a solar / wind / micro-hydro powered home / car / neighborhood / community / state / country / world

e) compost our kitchen, yard, dog and human waste

f) grow an organic garden in our yard and in front of our south facing windows year round

g) where to start....   what to do first....   how not to get overwhelmed

I went with farland tonight to see a couple of films sponsored by the local sierra club chapter as part of a week of an "energy film festival". 

tonight we saw, "end of suburbia" and a clip of a film still in production, "hooked on growth" by david gardner. 

both were inspiring, thought provoking, just what I needed. 

after the films we had a discussion with dave, the filmmaker, and he told us about "no impact man."   that website is a scream and has some great ideas and discussion going on.  

I was so excited about the whole evening's discussion that I was talking to george about it when I got to work and he shared this article with me which just builds on the rest of the discussion.....  orion magazine, the gospel of consumption.

I am wondering about how best to live:  living large with a small environmental footprint. 

I am wondering right now if it is possible to convince 6.5 billion of us to STOP the madness of growth and to live, luxuriously, simply with less; to be content with enough; to recognize enough as enough.  I am hoping so. 

I am wondering what I can do this minute to make my own life more sustainable, less resource intensive, more enjoyable, more wholistic and where to begin and where to focus my energy as each of my days begins.  How can I be most effective, least damaging?

There is no such thing as a zero impact human being, I think.....  but how to be the best possible impact and the least possible harm??

tonight I looked at the stars in a clear sky from my neighborhood that has no streetlights and I was glad about the darkness on my street.

the artist that appeals to me most lately is mother nature.  she knocked my socks off just this morning while I was discovering a brand new place so close to my old usual places.  :-) 

ok, here goes.  I've read tons of answers to this question and thought about it most of the day and now I feel ready to answer. 

What does worth mean to you? Does it change in different circumstances? How do you decide what's worthwhile?

we make things worthwhile.  by the attention we pay.  we decide which battles to fight, what to stand up for, what attitudes to promote, who to be.  we decide.  by gratitude we make things worthwhile.

I googled worth and then I googled worthwhile.  I found a website that purported to be "for worthwhile christians only.  unsaved stay away".  it freaked me out.  I looked at it for about 5 minutes, felt nauseous at the hate messages I read there, felt confused and frightened.  and then I stopped giving it my attention.  I decided that my attention and the time I am given of this life are valuable resources to me and I decided not to squander them on something that makes me feel really terrible and that I have little chance of changing or affecting in any way.

of all the websites I could've clicked on from the google search results why did I choose that one.  Morbid curiosity??  no.  it was desire to understand.  I go the way that I haven't gone before to see what I can see that's new.  so I did.  and I found something even there to be thankful for.  I'm thankful that the people I encounter day to day are not hateful, but loving and giving and amazing. 

I have an intention to wrap myself in gratitude.  It's warmer and softer than cashmere. It can be expressed without creating any carbon footprint whatsoever.  It's the least expensive gift I can think of.  And it's an investment that keeps giving and giving and giving.  I haven't heard of a gratitude market crash. 

I am grateful for a leader such as Thich Nhat Hanh.  I am grateful for his presence in the world -- strong, peaceful, whole, loving, full.  I am grateful for the reminder of how exclusiveness feels and how inclusiveness feels.  The contrast is instructive.

Have you ever pondered the idea that exclusivity is the opposite of inclusiveness??  Just wondered.

I'm sure your living room is very nice and I'm sure that you are also very nice and call me limited, but I can't imagine selling phone access to myself.  Plus, my living room, though small, is also incredibly nice and I only have to pay for heat and lighting and water and the reasonably priced mortgage to be in it.

As I said, I am indeed enjoying the Holosync recordings, so thanks for that, but no thanks on the weird invitation to pay you to join you in your living room or call you on the phone.

and right now, I'm grateful for the ability to say thanks, but no thanks.  and for the ability to be grateful for what I have right now instead of needing to buy access to someone else for my happiness, because that is really and truly a great gift and it's FREE.  all I have to pay is attention. 

which brings me back to the question, what is worthwhile?  obviously, to me, spending a weekend in Bill Harris' house several times a year and having unlimited phone access to him is not worth $30,000.  to me, the things that are worthwhile in life are priceless, they are the things that you can't actually quantify with a dollar sign.  love, laughter, gratitude, health, harmony, friendship, companionship, fresh air, clean water, the star filled sky at night.  maybe mr. harris is planning on teaching his weekend living room workshop attendees those things.  but what he isn't telling them is that they can have them, right now, just for the price of paying attention to them and being them.
