What makes something worthwhile?

Posted on Nov 26th, 2008 by synonym for light : pliable provocateur synonym for light
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 26, 2008:

American_lake_1
ok, here goes.  I've read tons of answers to this question and thought about it most of the day and now I feel ready to answer.

What does worth mean to you? Does it change in different circumstances? How do you decide what's worthwhile?

we make things worthwhile.  by the attention we pay.  we decide which battles to fight, what to stand up for, what attitudes to promote, who to be.  we decide.  by gratitude we make things worthwhile.

I googled worth and then I googled worthwhile.  I found a website that purported to be "for worthwhile christians only.  unsaved stay away".  it freaked me out.  I looked at it for about 5 minutes, felt nauseous at the hate messages I read there, felt confused and frightened.  and then I stopped giving it my attention.  I decided that my attention and the time I am given of this life are valuable resources to me and I decided not to squander them on something that makes me feel really terrible and that I have little chance of changing or affecting in any way.

of all the websites I could've clicked on from the google search results why did I choose that one.  Morbid curiosity??  no.  it was desire to understand.  I go the way that I haven't gone before to see what I can see that's new.  so I did.  and I found something even there to be thankful for.  I'm thankful that the people I encounter day to day are not hateful, but loving and giving and amazing.

I have an intention to wrap myself in gratitude.  It's warmer and softer than cashmere. It can be expressed without creating any carbon footprint whatsoever.  It's the least expensive gift I can think of.  And it's an investment that keeps giving and giving and giving.  I haven't heard of a gratitude market crash.

I am grateful for a leader such as Thich Nhat Hanh.  I am grateful for his presence in the world -- strong, peaceful, whole, loving, full.  I am grateful for the reminder of how exclusiveness feels and how inclusiveness feels.  The contrast is instructive.

As some of you know I am a Holosync user, a believer and a skeptic all rolled in to one.  And I am grateful for the sound recordings I've purchased from Bill Harris over at The Centerpointe Institute.  I think Bill has probably introduced meditation to some who might never have tried it and the research is wonderful.  Now here's the rub.  I get a lot of email from Bill or someone on his staff who has commandeered his email address and good name.  He's always offering me some LIMITED TIME ONLY super duper exlusive offer.  Here's the most recent....

Subject: My staff thinks I'm crazy for doing this.....

Dear Dawn,
....but I'm totally convinced it's the right thing to do.

I've just created a very special new program that
provides an even greater level of service and
closer personal relationship with me than ever.

This is truly historic and I want you to take a look at
it right now.  Go to: www.centerpointe.com/vip/

This email is going out to a lot of people, but only a very
small handful will be able to take advantage of it.

Maybe this small group includes you...

Go to:  www.centerpointe.com/vip/ to
find out how to qualify.

Be well,

Bill

so I clicked on the link to see what the extra special exclusive offer was....  curious......

here's what I found.....

"How would you benefit if you could work face-to-face with Bill Harris, for an entire year, exploring — and solving — your deepest personal issues?

"I'm inviting a small select group who really want to go for it to four special invitation only weekend intensives, held in the living room of my home.

These same people will also get unlimited personal telephone access to me — plus a huge pile of other valuable perks and benefits...

Dear Centerpointe friend,

How quickly would you grow — emotionally, mentally, spiritually, financially, and in many other ways...

...if you and I could work closely
together for an entire year

In how many different ways would your life improve if you and I created a personal relationship specifically designed to help you create the life you want?

Quite likely your stress level would go down. Your satisfaction with life would go up. Your spiritual awakening would accelerate. You'd get to the bottom of what has been holding you back. You'd make better decisions, leading to better results. You'd be more in charge of your feelings. Your actions would be more resourceful and more easily lead to what you want.

Here's my idea:

First, you'll meet with me — and just nine other people — for two full days every three months, four times a year, in the living room of my home — going as deeply as possible into your issues, looking at the specific areas of life where you need improvement, feel stuck, or just want to go to a higher, more effective level.

Then, between these special, intimate meetings, we'll keep in touch by phone because you'll have unlimited telephone access to me. As questions come up, as decisions need to be made, as ideas come to mind, as challenges arise...

...I'll be there to help you through them.

With this kind of personal attention, you'll move even faster than you can with Holosync alone. I'll be the mirror that helps you notice the blind spots that hold you back — and help you figure out what to do about them.

I'll share and help you implement strategies I've used, or that have been used by people like Zen master Genpo Roshi, or Jack Canfield, or my good friend Byron Katie, and other well-known people known for their spiritual, psychological, or worldly success.

Though the real value is in my ability to work closely with you, in a very small and intimate setting, I also want to make sure you have virtually everything else we offer, or have offered, at Centerpointe. That means that if you don't already have it, I'm also going to throw in the full Inner Circle (the entire Holosync program)...the amazing Gamma Compassion soundtracks for each program level...every other Holosync soundtrack I've every created...free admission to any other Centerpointe seminars or events I do during your membership...all the bonuses I create for other promotions during your membership...the Platinum level of my Life Principles Integration Process online courses (where you have email access to me for questions)...access to every article, video, audio, or workbook I've ever created...and anything else I discover that I haven't listed here.

Lately I'm feeling drawn to work closely with the most serious and motivated Holosync users who want to move fast and go as deep as possible — those who urgently want to create...

...freedom, happiness, inner peace,
financial success, and spiritual enlightenment.

Over 750,000 people have used Holosync since I started Centerpointe in 1989. Now, I want to work with three exclusive groups: one group of just ten people...a second group of twenty people...and a third group of just fifty people.

If you'd like a lot of personal attention...if you REALLY want to focus on your growth...if you want to meet others who feel the same way...if you want to have the ultimate personal advisor...if you REALLY want to go for it...

...you need to know about my new Ultra Inner Circle.

This is the most personal, high-touch service I've ever offered — and, it isn't for everyone. But if you want "growth in the fast lane"...my continuing mentoring and feedback for an entire year...and lots of personal attention...you might be the person I'm looking for.

Here's what you get when you join the Ultra Inner Circle at the Platinum Level (see below for Gold and Silver Levels):

Four weekend intensives with me, one every three months — just you and nine other similarly qualified members — in the living room of my home (valued at $10,000 x 4 = $40,000)

  •
    • Sessions will be at my home in Hillsboro, Oregon, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM on a Saturday and Sunday. The event schedule is in the Membership Application form (see below).
    • Sessions including a catered or restaurant lunch and dinner each day (dinner will be at the conclusion of the day's session). Breakfast, hotel, and travel are your responsibility.
    • These sessions will include lots of personal attention to your needs and the ability to go deeply into personal issues, allowing rapid progress. I will use Big Mind, cognitive psychology, Zen, NLP, Holosync, breathwork, and many other modalities and approaches. You'll benefit not only from my interaction with you, but also as you observe my interactions with the other attendees. We will address the key issues in your life and move fast.
    • We can work on goal setting, making money, relationships, spiritual growth, emotional and psychological damage, or anything else you want to address.

Unlimited phone access to me from 10 AM to 5 PM, Pacific time, weekdays, for one year (valued at $12,000)

  •
    • I reserve the right to occasionally postpone calls if I have a deadline I need to attend to, if I'm traveling, if I'm ill, or some other pressing matter comes up, in which case I will return the call as soon as possible. My intention is to be as available to you as possible.
    • Calls need to be 30 minutes or less in length.
    • Calls need to be about a specific issue — not just social calls or "I just wanted to chat" calls. I want to be available to you, but you need to be respectful of my time.

Plus, as I said above, I'm going to add any of the following that you don't already have:

  •
    • Full Inner Circle membership (valued at $2997)
    • Gamma Compassion CDs for each level of the Holosync program (valued at $708)
    • One free Big Mind workshop with me and Genpo Roshi (unless something prevents us from holding any during your membership, which is unlikely). This will include a special evening session at the event with me and other Ultra Inner Circle members only (valued at $1000).
    • Free admission to any other live events I have during your membership.
    • All bonuses we offer during Centerpointe Specials held that year (valued at approximately $1000)
    • Platinum level Life Principles Integration Process online course access, including unlimited email access to me during the entire course. See centerpointe.com/life/preview for more information about the LPIP online courses (valued at $1200).
    • All World's Greatest Teachers modules (39 recorded conversations with 37 different teachers), my Nine Principles for Conscious Living book, my Oneness Isn't Metaphysical book, all Autofonix CDs (7 titles), (valued at $2,594)
    • Any new products we offer during your membership

Platinum members may also attend one Silver Level weekend intensive.

Total Value of all items is $61,499.00!

Your investment to join: $30,000

Limit: 10 people

What you'll really get, though, is my attention for an entire year. We'll be able to dive into what really makes you tick, why you feel the way you feel, why you behave the way you behave, why you attract the people and situations you've been attracting into your life — what your life is all about, why your life is the way it is, and...

...how it can be the way you want it to be.

I'll leave no stone unturned and use every tool I know of to bring you to the place where you are the master of your life.

Obviously, though, you have a huge responsibility in this process, too. No matter what I do, the ultimate responsibility for what happens rests on your shoulders. I'll be your tour guide, your mirror, and your mentor, but you have to do the work and make the changes.

If you have a way of navigating in the world, understanding the world, interacting with the world, assigning meaning to the world, or seeing the world, and you need to drop it or change it in order to live the life you want, you're the only one who can actually change it or drop it. I can't do it for you.

I can point the way, and facilitate your ability to "get" what you need to do or change...

...but the ultimate responsibility is yours.

Also realize that this is a no-refund offer. Please don't even think of joining this elite group unless you have total confidence in me and in my ability (and personal commitment) to help you.

In return, I'll do everything in my power to make sure that this is, quite literally, the experience of a lifetime. If you have the slightest doubt about the value of joining, you should pass on this opportunity. I only want to work with people who are totally on board and ready to...

...hit the ground running.

I promise to make this an exciting and highly beneficial year for you.

Membership will be by invitation only. Each member will be chosen based on a written application and a telephone interview.

Since over 450,000 people have been invited to consider this opportunity, it's quite likely that I will receive considerably more than ten applications for the ten spots. For that reason, there's no guarantee that you'll get one of the ten spots if you apply. I'm going to choose the people I most want to work with, and...

...who seem best prepared to benefit.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION FORM

If the cost of this opportunity is just too much for you, I understand. Not everyone can afford this kind of personal attention. If what I've just described (the Platinum Level) is beyond your means, please consider the Gold or Silver Levels.

The Gold Level is half the cost of the Platinum Level — $15,000 — and is only open to twenty people, so it's also a very exclusive group. Here are some other differences:

Instead of four intensives, one each quarter, the Gold Level includes two weekend intensives, one every six months, with the other 19 Gold Level members. The Gold Level intensives will be held at a Portland, Oregon hotel and will include lunch each day. Otherwise, the Gold Level intensives will be the same. The event schedule is in the Membership Application form (see below). (value $8,000 x 2 = $16,000)

Instead of unlimited phone access, the year-long phone access to me will be during a 2-hour "office hours" window two days each week. Calls will be by appointment, and will be limited to 15 minutes per call, if need be, to accommodate as many callers as possible. If time permits, calls may be extended up to 30 minutes. (valued at $6,000)

And, with the Gold Level I'll also include all other product items (if you don't already have them) available to the Platinum Level members, except for the free Big Mind workshop.

Total value of all items in Gold Level: $35,499.00

Your investment to join: $15,000 per person

Limited to 20 people

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION FORM

The Silver Level is $6,000, and will be available to 50 people. It will include one weekend intensive, at a Portland, Oregon hotel and will include lunch each day. The event schedule is in the Membership Application form. (valued at $3,000)

You will also get two 90-minute webinars where we will continue the work we did at the live event. (value $2,000)

Phone access to me will be during a 2-hour "office hours" window once each week for an entire year, with the same conditions as in the Gold Level. (value $5,000)

Each Silver Level member will receive six Holosync deeper levels, rather than a full Inner Circle, plus all other product items available to Gold members (if you don't have them already).

Total value of all items: $17,254.00

Your investment to join: $6,000 per person

Limited to 50 people

As with the Platinum Level, the Gold Level is by invitation only, based on a written application form and a telephone interview. The Silver Level will not include a phone interview, but will require a completed application form.

And, regardless of which level of participation, this is a no-refund membership. Please do not apply unless you have total confidence in me and my ability to help you, and in your own ability to take responsibility for the amount of progress you're willing to make during this amazing year long relationship we'll be having.

In return, I promise to go the extra mile to make this the experience of a lifetime for you — something that will...

...change your life forever.

A few other details: To eliminate credit card processing fees, we can only accept payment by check or direct bank wire. If you would like to participate, please fill out an application by clicking on the link below and send it to us by mail along with your check. If you are requesting the Platinum or Gold Levels, I will personally call you once I've reviewed your application.

If for some reason your application is not accepted, or if the level you are applying for fills before your application can be considered, your payment will be returned to you, or you may be contacted to see if you would like to be included in the Gold or Silver Levels.

Personal mentoring and instruction have played a huge role in my own success, in my ability to get rid of my own dysfunctional emotional problems, and in my own path of spiritual awakening.

Now I want to provide you with the same support and one-on-one help. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Director
Centerpointe Research Institute

I made a value choice for myself.  I found Bill's email and invitation distasteful.  Even irritating.  I hit reply and sent him this....

Bill,

Have you ever pondered the idea that exclusivity is the opposite of inclusiveness??  Just wondered.

I'm sure your living room is very nice and I'm sure that you are also very nice and call me limited, but I can't imagine selling phone access to myself.  Plus, my living room, though small, is also incredibly nice and I only have to pay for heat and lighting and water and the reasonably priced mortgage to be in it.

In the interest of stretching myself I'll just throw this out -- if you decide you need to talk to someone grounded you can call me up.  My phone # is 970-379-9113 and I am providing it to you free of charge.  I reserve the right to only answer at my convenience, but if you leave a message I'll get back to you as soon as I can.  Then, if our conversation is indeed enlightening to you, I'll let you decide what it was worth and give that amount to the universe in the form of service at your own convenience.

I hope you find that what you are doing really IS the right thing to do, but if you find you'd like to take another path here are some options...

As I said, I am indeed enjoying the Holosync recordings, so thanks for that, but no thanks on the weird invitation to pay you to join you in your living room or call you on the phone.

Peace and love and Happy Thanksgiving.
-Dawn Dexter

and right now, I'm grateful for the ability to say thanks, but no thanks.  and for the ability to be grateful for what I have right now instead of needing to buy access to someone else for my happiness, because that is really and truly a great gift and it's FREE.  all I have to pay is attention.

which brings me back to the question, what is worthwhile?  obviously, to me, spending a weekend in Bill Harris' house several times a year and having unlimited phone access to him is not worth $30,000.  to me, the things that are worthwhile in life are priceless, they are the things that you can't actually quantify with a dollar sign.  love, laughter, gratitude, health, harmony, friendship, companionship, fresh air, clean water, the star filled sky at night.  maybe mr. harris is planning on teaching his weekend living room workshop attendees those things.  but what he isn't telling them is that they can have them, right now, just for the price of paying attention to them and being them.

Oh my goodness. Okay, when you mentioned the holosync thing earlier I contacted them and got the free cd and promo materials and honestly, it just creeped me out. It reminded me of a business I used to work for, where the owners who were brothers who constantly battled each other sold subliminal message woohoo new age message cd's and portrayed themselves as somehow enlightened although they wanted to kill each other on a daily basis.  I'll tell you more another time, but it set off all my snake oil alarms…I can tell myself all the things that are important and focus my own consciousness without buying anything. I'm always grateful for being able to say thanks but no thanks. And for my living room.

Hi:
I'm a Holosync Inner Circle Member (and one of the Moderators for the Gaia Holosync Group) - and this is just Bill Harris being…. well…. Bill Harris - super-entrepreneur, and possibly a little more than over the top - especially on what he thinks HIS time is worth.

I love the Holosync program and have benefitted immensely from it over the four years I've been using it.  I got into Holosync just shortly after I became a Certified Hypnotist.  Now I'm a Certified Hypnosis and NLP Instructor.  Aside from what he may be able to contribute on the Zen side of things, anyone with the training that I have acquired can do what he's proposing to do.  I can also tell you that at the lowest (Silver?) level, this might come close to what a good weekend with a top level trainer/coach like the guy I studied from could respectfully charge (I just finished spending $2,500 to take his training over 5 days, plus a couple hours of personal coaching).  The rest is just over-the-top.

What Bill is looking for are about  18 to 20 rich dudes who will come and swallow this up like Starbuck's lattes, and then help to promote him on the road.  That's what he does.  He enjoys the travel, the contact, the accolades, etc. at nauseum……

But I must also say, I'm just a little startled that you'd allow yourself to get so charged up about this, SFL.  :)  My response to getting this was to read it well, actually a couple of times, make a copy of it for the wording of his “copy” - because there's always value in his marketing lingo somewhere, and then I had a good laugh.  Your response to him will probably never be seen by him, which is probably unfortunate.  As to whether or not he truly has learned how to handle HIS emotions - I've seen him in action on a Holosync forum, and it ain't pretty if he's crossed…… LOL!!!!! Of course, that was a couple of years ago - maybe Jenpo Roshi has Big-Minded him enough now to quell that flame a bit. ;)
Hugs,
Gem ~~~^v^~~~

I sent away for the cd and the next day they were already trying to convince me to buy it. That said it all ,keep your program I'd rather remain unenlightened and put my money elsewhere than be unenlightened and out 6,000 dollars.
Good on you for sending the letter I just vented to a friend.

OMG…LOL…..Well, at least he doesn't seem to be totally dangerous, I mean he's just looking for some bored rich ones to entertain them.
The worst is that there are lots of freaks like him around, looking for troubled people to take advantage on their situation, promising miracles, health, love, whatever they are in need…
Thanks for talking about the subject, I allways wonder why is it so ignored and the freaks treated like therapists, helpers, saints…

jeannie you crack me up – priceless!  :-)

“it set off all my snake oil alarms…I can tell myself all the things that are important and focus my own consciousness without buying anything. I'm always grateful for being able to say thanks but no thanks. And for my living room.”

My snake oil detectors were also on high alert when I started the holosync stuff, but my curiosity won out.  and the self experiment is still going on.  I do like the recordings.  I don't think bill harris is a bad guy or that the holosync technology is a bad thing, but I also don't think he has all the answers and frankly he doens't seem like he's gotten all of his dysfunctionality worked out.  I mean – who charges people $30,000 for a year of a “closer personal relationship”?  and why would I want to pay even $6000 for a year of a not as close as that other person's “closer personal relationship”.  it just seems absurd to me.

I have indeed found some interesting insights in one of bill's books and from a few of the talks that he recorded with various people – sally kemton for one.   I am always interested in wisdom offered.

and gemstar – I wouldn't categorize my response to bill's marketing as “allowing myself to get so charged up”.  My email response to bill's email is simply me having a conversation – whether or no my email will ever be seen by bill himself, it was valuable for me to share my reaction.  and posting it here on my blog will increase the chances of it actually being read by bill one day.  one of the problems I see with “gurus” of many sorts is their inability to hear feedback from anyone but other “gurus”.  I think they must get expertitis; symtoms to include swelling of the head and difficulty hearing.  :-)

one of my personal rules is, if someone offers me communication, in the form of email or snail mail or news or blogs or face to face, even movies or books…  I give feedback.  thoughtful, constructive feedback.  I am an observer and a listener and a lover of life and, yes, a co-creator of my universe and giving feedback is one of the ways of being a good co-creator.  sometimes my feedback is my way of having a good chuckle.  I certainly wasn't feeling “charged up” when I replied to bill's marketing, I was laughing to myself and at the same time offering something constructive as an alternative.  those links are absolutely stunning alternatives to our gross/growth based capitalism.  if you read my blog regularly, you'll find that I write lots of letters for lots of reasons and I often share them here.  I don't have to be particularly charged up to write a letter, I just do it as a matter of course, whenever I have feedback to give.  I've written letters to editors of newspapers and magazines, to managers of grocery stores, to senators and representatives and presidents, to tomato juice sellers, to my mom and dad and son and husband, to friends, to perfect strangers and even to the people who sent me election propaganda.  I'm a letter writing fool.

and in retrospect, I do actually “sell” phone access to myself.  I'm a 911 operator and dispatcher.  I've spent anywhere from 40 to 60 hours a week for the past 14 years offering phone access to myself.  when I first started I earned less per hour to answer 911 calls and send fire trucks or police or ambulances to people in crisis than my young cousin was earning to work the drive thru at the arby's in the same town.  now I make somewhat less than bartenders at the highest end bars in aspen, but the work is steady and somewhat more rewarding than flinging alcohol at people who would probably be better off without it.  and here's something – most dispatchers / 911 operators in the world work long, hard hours for not the best pay and do it with a smile and they are indeed offering phone access to themselves but they offer it to EVERYone.  noone is ever refused access based on inability to pay or inability to convince us that they are good candidates for our service.  of course, we aren't offering, “close personal relationships” but we are offering service to all, equally.  I actually love it when people who are calling for help ask me, “do  you know who I am?!” because it's usually followed by an “impressive” title or an “important” list of qualifications.  it makes me laugh because they obviously believe that telling me who they are is somehow going to get them better service than if they were a “nobody” like me.  I usually tell them, gently and kindly, that it doesn't matter to me who they are, they will get the same high level of service whether they are a transient bum or the dalai llama, the king of england or the queen of the silver screen.

as for my close personal relationships, I don't charge for them and I don't pay for them.  I do think that paying for things is just another way to exchange energy and I try always to decide what is worth my energy.  usually, I find it most rewarding to go toward and share the things that make me feel REALLY good, really happy, really alive.

ultimately, if bill can command $30,000 per year per person for “closer personal relationships” with him that come with lots of limits and rules and demands that people respect his time and have a reason for calling him and not just call to chat, then by golly, I guess free market capitalism is working for him and I don't begrudge him that.  plus, if someone who can afford it is spending their $30,000 on hanging out with bill, that's mostly a non-pollutiing sort of conspicuous consumerism, so…   fine by me.  I wonder though, if they might not feel even more amazing if they spent their $30,000 on some cause other than their own disfunctionality.  would they get more satisfaction out of starting a community garden or helping a school  or…..  something else worthwhile???  maybe, maybe not.  I would.  :-)

I understand we make our livings in different ways, selling our services or our time but the persistent hard sell the idea that exclusive is better , that you have to keep on buying to “advance”.  What does that say about their interest in people who have very little money or even people in general. “You are poor so too bad, call us when you have some cash”. If you are not wealthy we have no interest in you.
There is something so sad about the whole thing. If it does help people the way the testimonials say it does why not make it available to everyone ,like swimming classes at the YWCA,or community kitchens where people who really have a hard time stocking their fridge benefit. Why not introduce it free of charge into prisons , or the armies around the world if this truly brings inner peace why not share it with the world for free or on a sliding scale,if inner peace is what  he is preaching.
Seriously if he has the answers why not share for real , instead of calling it sharing but really just taking as much money as possible. Practice what you preach for once ,be open,be transparent,be honest. I'm thinking if he wrote the letter saying that he is only in this for the money that he doesn't give a shit about the people who buy into this I might actually have a chuckle and a weird kinda respect at least for the honesty anyways.

b.b. – EXACTLY!

in Bill's promotional materials he talks about how the Holosync technology can help people learn better, can help people overcome trauma, can help people change old patterns.  if this is the case, then the people who need it most…  war veterans, veterans of domestic violence or child abuse or any form of physical or mental or emotional violence….  these are the one who can benefit the most and probably can afford it least.  what if Bill used his astronomical fees to start a program to offer this technology to those that can benefit the greatest and in the process really changed the fabric of soceity.  Then he could say, instead of 750,000 people who have used and benefitted from the Holosync technology, he could probably boast about millions who benefitted.

Maybe he's doing this already, but if so, I haven't been able to find any info on it.  Even the most prestigious, most expensive schools in our country offer scholarships.  I'd contribute to a Holosync scholarship fund if Bill was inclined to start one.  and then even more research could be done.

Maybe I'll write him another letter and include that suggestion.  Anyone want to start a petition??  Would that be a worthwhile thing?

and one more thing — my friend at work with whom I often discuss semantics and conotations of words pointed out that she likes – “giving attention” better than “paying attention”.  I like that.  I'm going to say that more often.  I'm going to give my attention to the things I think are worthwhile instead of pay my attention to them.  it's a subtle difference, but it does feel different, doesn't it??

thanks to all of you for giving your time and energy to this discussion.  I was thinking it's like having our very own “the view”, but with less hooopla.

hoopla - now there's a fun word.  :-)

night night girls.  I'm headed to my bed for a well earned sleep.  I'll be back to work for the graveyard shift again this thanksgiving night.  and I'm thankful for my work and thankful for time to sleep and thankful for the cozy home with cozy blankets and pillows and ever so thankful that my wonderful husband will be back home tomorrow night and so, so, so thankful for all of you and this fun discussion and……..    zzzzzzzz.

Selling enlightenment is in a different universe from selling a public service, regardless of whether you use a phone for both.  Although I have to say, I've asked some of the same questions you posed, Dawn, only about how health care can be exclusive in this country - if people called 911 because their house was on fire and got a conversation like “Well, I'm looking at your policy and you haven't met your $2000 deductible for this year, so will you be able to meet the firetruck with a check for that amount?” people would flip out. So why do we value property more than people, or maybe just value money more than people - which, in my mind, is what selling enlightenment is all about. It seems…odd.

Hello to Dawn and everyone,

I don't have time today to read everyone's comments but I at least wanted to make this comment.

I confess I have been meditating with Holosync for about a year now. I started because of a recommendation from my brother. I also noticed a very positive change in his overall attitude toward life.

I was immediately turned off big-time by Bill Harris. My background in spirituality comes from the Buddhist perspective where generousity is an important element. Bill's extreme capitalistic attitude was repulsive to me.

So what I do is ignore him. I sit in the mornings and use the sound tracks as timing devices and a bit of a crutch to keep me going with my mediation. I would like to be going to meditation retreats but my situation right now, won't allow it.

I listen to my dharma teachers for inspiration.

When I get emails from Bill they go straight to trash without even reading them. This is working nicely for me.

Gotta go do Thanksgiving now. Will come back and read the comments later.

Cheers,   jw

Oh Jeannie isn't it though. I feel post saturated by all of it today. It feels so forced this whole idea of freaking enlightenment,to the point that if I bumped into someone who called themselves a guru today a wedgie might be in order.

I agree totally with the idea that if this technology is so good, why not give it freely to those who need it most and do something very good to make this a better world. Bill Harris is definitely not a bodhisatva.

However, I am reminded of a conversation I had with a guy I was dating in college. He worked for TM (transendental meditation.) At that time it cost $30 to get a mantra. My question to him was, “If this is so good and the TM people are so spiritual, why do you have to pay to get a mantra?” He responded by saying that Americans don't value things unless they have to pay money for them. Unfortunately, I think he had a point.

What is important is doing the meditation, whether you do retreats or use binaural beat technology. Everything else is just distraction.

I've heard the argument that Americans don't value things unless they have to pay money for them before and I think it's a weak argument.  Perhaps it's true that SOME Americans don't value things unless they have to pay money for them, but I'm not one of those and I know plenty of Americans who do value things they don't have to pay for.  Love, friendship, sleep, hikes, camping……  all things I don't pay money for but value a great deal.  My Gaia membership….    free, and greatly appreciated.  The library – oh I LOVE the library — and it's free except for the taxes we pay to support it.

I don't know many people who don't value hugs or smiles or small kindnesses from loved ones.  Gifts given free of charge.  And who doesn't love being listened to, what a gift it is to give or receive undivided attention.  These are all  free and much valued.

This is acutally the way we need to focus our attention if we are going to turn the tide of consumerism and move to a sustainable society and restore some balance to our planet.

I am currently rereading Thich Nhat Hanh's “The World We Have, A Buddhist Approach to Peace and Ecology” and this morning my friend showed me the book she is reading (borrowed from the fabulous library!), ”Listening is an Act of Love.“    I wonder if acts of love make our hearts grow larger?

Thich Nhat Hanh says….

If your cup is small, a little bit of salt will make the water salty. If your heart is small, then a little bit of pain can make you suffer. Your heart must be large.

Some thoughts that came up:

I think that when money is given for the time someone does anything for us; it helps in  having an energy exchange that is far easier than if we had to actually do something for the one giving that gift. e.g. when a guru gives something to a student, and the student/initiate gives the gift of personal service for the guru; that is something most people would not like to give.

I also feel that giving a mantra is not inherently more spiritual than giving e.g. a glass of water or even telling someone a story. It is the attitude/ the ”bhaav” with which one accepts it, that makes it spiritual or mundane.

On another note, when we are asked to pay in money for something spiritually offered; and we feel we don't have it; we just have to intend, and the money comes–or the $amount of the offer is reduced to what I can pay. It's  happened to me a few times, and I realize that even getting my feelings “right” about the exchange of money in this situation, was a part of the learning and the imparting of a spiritual lesson.

I agree with gemstar that this is Bill being Bill. However, in a world that is as diverse as our world is and a world that promotes “exclusivity,”  what we need most is more promotion of  the “inclusive.” IMHO So, I am turned off by the “exclusivity” of it all. And that's just coming from probably some projection I have going on or a personal story I am telling myself about lack and limitation. But for me, even more, if I had the money to do this thing, I would not need to do it. That's the paradox for me. The only reason that I would be interested in his offering would be to help me understand and change my prosperity consciousness from one of lack to one of being and living more prosperous financially. And I figure if I had the money to participate in his ultimate inner circle, then I'd already be there in the first place.

I think that there are a lot cheaper or less expensive ways of “accelerating” personal growth. What the HS cds do for me create all the personal growth I need at the speed I can handle right now anyway. An I regularly do holotropic breathwork locally which augments the HS listening. And it isn't costing me 30K per year. And my men's support group is free and I'd say is helping to accelerate my personal growth.

But I am going to refrain from judging Bill personally for what he is offering since I can't get in his head and it would just be my own projections and stories anyway.  I would do it differently I think but I am not Bill. But who knows what I'd do if I believed I really deserved a much better life than I am living now? I'm working on believing it anyway so I'll keep you posted when I get there.  LOL

“if I believed I really deserved a much better life than I am living now?”

I guess I really, really love the life I am living now, for the most part.  even if it doesn't include fame and fortune and STUFF n' stuff.

my focus is to enjoy every single moment that is offered me.  my work for myself is to let each thing be joyful, to let each moment be spiritual –

mindfulness and lovingkindness.

the thing about bill's emails is that each and every one of them suggests that my life is somehow impoverished or will be if I manage to miss out on the next best thing he is hawking.

he uses classic advertising techniques, those intended to create demand for something that is not necessarily needed.

anyone here familiar with AdBusters?  or culture jamming?

the goal of most advertising is to convince you that you need something, to convince you that you lack something – and bill's advertising is no better than those slick ads trying to sell you another car or a better yoga mat.

my point with this post was merely to say —-

“the things that are worthwhile in life are priceless, they are the things that you can't actually quantify with a dollar sign.  love, laughter, gratitude, health, harmony, friendship, companionship, fresh air, clean water, the star filled sky at night.  maybe mr. harris is planning on teaching his weekend living room workshop attendees those things.  but what he isn't telling them is that they can have them, right now, just for the price of paying attention to them and being them.”

look for the beauty in this world, in this life, and you will find it.  look for the ways in which your own life is not already perfect and you will find them.  give your attention to joy and friendship and love and the star filled sky at night and you will have them.  subject oneself to lots of advertising that promises somehow to make your life better and if you aren't carefully questioning the premise of the advertising you might find yourself believing that somehow something or someone outside of yourself has the answers for you.

there was a study I read once that showed that after certain basics were met with just a little room for luxuries, more money doesn't make us happier.  we're that ones that make ourselves happy, by the things we give our attention to.  :-)

OK. SFL, I am making an assumption here that you are open for discussion. So I want to make a comment and I am taking responsiblilty that this is a judgment and projection of mine. And I do the same thing I will be discussing all the time.

In your above comment you state, “the thing about bill's emails is that each and every one of them suggests that my life is somehow impoverished or will be if I manage to miss out on the next best thing he is hawking.”

And you also state, “the goal of most advertising is to convince you that you need something, to convince you that you lack something - and bill's advertising is no better than those slick ads trying to sell you another car or a better yoga mat. ”

In reference to the 1st comment, when I read Bill's emails, I just see that he is trying to sell something that he thinks may be of benefit to you that he feels is worthy of his endorsement. And yes, he is most likely going to benefit from your purchase monetarily. The fact that I don't interpret it the same way as you do suggests that we are both projecting our stuff on to Bill's advertisement and Bill. I am judging that you have some stuff that is being triggered by Bill's presentation and you are making a judgment about the presentation and about Bill as well based on a projection coming from all of your filters.

To use Bill's words in some of his support literature, you are playing the game of Black and White. And I am too, when I judge and project making one person's way wrong and my way right. Eckert Tolle discusses this same characteristic of the ego. We all do this all of the time. It is the structure of the ego. Over time, and I can speak for myself only as it is what I have observed in me, is that holosync listening will bring this process more and more into the light of our conscious awareness.

In reference to the second comment I quoted from you…. I (me) am not sure how anyone would sell anything without trying to cultivate some need for it in the mind of the prospective consumer. The better the advertising, the stronger this need is created. It is still the responsibility of the consumer to determine if this is really something that would improve his or her life and would therefore make sense to purchase. The victim mentality would be seduced and remorseful and resentful if after purchasing realized that he or she really didn't need that. The responsible, powerful mentality would just see it as a learning experience if  he/she determined the same.

I went to the link at Centerpointe's website that explained all of what Bill was offering for the $30K “deal” for personal growth acceleration and I think that even if I had $30k to burn, I would not take advantage of it. In my view, there are many other less expensive roads to Damascus. I did make a brief judgment that it sounded a bit absurd and over priced and even pretentious. And my other judgment was that Bill must have a tremendous ego and be quite full of himself or overly confident with his own value. I wonder where that resides in me? Humm? Or maybe it is just triggering a sense of worthlessness in me and I am resentful and not owning that part of myself. It's certainly a good way to play the game of Black and White and make Bill wrong and me right. It's also a good way for me to play the victim. Either way, I get to be right. And unconscious.

But, from what I am learning and discovering about myself, this is all coming from me (as noted by possible examples given above) and has little to do with any truth about Bill. The only important thing for me to get is what in me is causing me to react to his advertisement as I have and what projections am I making that can teach me something about me? What are the filters I am seeing through that keeps me playing this game and staying unconscious?

It is possible that what he is offering could have unlimited value to someone who had the means to accept it. It may be many times the $30K value to that person if it helps them to produce some signifigant change in their life that was of value for them.

Bill gets to use whatever means that is legal and within his value system to advertise his product. That's a fact. How I react to it is entirely up to me. And I can't know where his heart is in all of this. I can make judgments and assumptions but I am not Bill and I can't get into his head. So everything I think about it  and Bill is coming from my own filters, my own little creation and story  in my head. And no matter what I do to rationalize it, it most likely has little to do with the truth.

Your comment, “”the things that are worthwhile in life are priceless, they are the things that you can't actually quantify with a dollar sign.  love, laughter, gratitude, health, harmony, friendship, companionship, fresh air, clean water, the star filled sky at night.  maybe mr. harris is planning on teaching his weekend living room workshop attendees those things.  but what he isn't telling them is that they can have them, right now, just for the price of paying attention to them and being them.”,

is part of your own value system. And I would suggest that possibly, and this is my judgment, that you are making this into a  “should” meaning that this is how it ought to be and Bill's advertising rubs contrary to this view for you. While it may be true that all of the values that you speak of can be learned without spending a dime, it also may be true that for someone out there, spending $30K and sitting in Bill's living room, may the very way for them that they need to get that lesson. The Universe is in charge (my belief).

I am open to your comments. And I hope you don't take any of what I have said as a personal attack because I am constantly being triggered and pulled by my own judgments and projections. My ego loves the game of Black and White. And Bill's way of being Bill does challenge me. And I have met with him privately at a workshop before and got to know him a bit.

My judment of him, after spending 7 days with him, was that he is a genuine person and wants to help people become more of who they would like to be. Because I currently lack the supreme confidence he has, and because I currently lack the belief in my ability to live my life as full as he appears to live his (my judgment again), his boldness (my judgment) scares me and challenges me at times. That comes from a place in me that envies him. And I do. I hope to live a much better life than I am living now and I do love a lot about my life now at the same time.

I have a good life on many levels and I want more, especially in the area of money. Current my financial life is one on struggle and lack. I stuggle to make the bills and in fact I am terribly behind on many. I am working towards changing this. As a result of where I am in consiousness, activities that I'd like to participate in that cost more money than I have can at times, if I let them, trigger my victim consciousness of lack and then I get into a bunch of judments, projections, and a bunch of other nasting, stinking thinking and story telling. But mostly, I am recognising this for what it is and stepping back in to my power because I see this “game” for what it is and how it simply keeps me in the place that I don't want to be and that is in a place of struggle and lack.

I thank the Universe and Bill for his advertisement because it has given me much spiritual food for change and the opportunity to examine much about myself as I observe myself and my reactions and responses to him and it.

In love and light

Larry,

you are so sweet and sincere.  waking up to your post here made me smile.

I am judging that you have some stuff that is being triggered by Bill's presentation and you are making a judgment about the presentation and about Bill as well based on a projection coming from all of your filters.

It's not that deep – I just like to question advertising and our cultural paradigm that thinks advertising is perfectly innocuous.  seen the state of planet earth lately??  it's in this state mostly because we, as a group, buy into all those ads – toothepaste, toilet papers, laundry soap, hair dye, this best car, that better car, furniture, bigger houses, sweaters for our dogs, movies, cd's, ipod's, zillions of kinds of shoes and jewelry, etc, etc, etc.

the thing bill is hawking is in some ways one of the least environmentally damaging – except the plane rides to oregon to see him, but I don't begrudge anyone a social trip. life is for living.  (I just wish we humans could do our living without destroying 30,000 + other species per year.  and yes, that is an absolute judgement call.)

as for the black and white game – I didn't say bill was wrong.  I just replied to what bill sent to me in an email.  and I QUESTIONED it's worth.  and said thanks, but no thanks.

the question of the day in the blog I posted was, “what makes something worthwhile?” and “how do you decide if something is worthwhile?”

so my answers to the question are MY answers to those things.  of course I'm making a judgment call – I'm deciding, for me, what is worthwhile.  and unless I want to say that all things are inherrently equally worthwhile, worth my time, worth my energy, worth my attention, then I have to make a judgement.

you'll note that I said I enjoy the holosync recordings.  and I do.  and the first few emails I recieved from bill, I checked and looked into with wide open eyes and ears and curiosity.  there was one from a guy about some kind of journey he was going to take us on, for a fee of some kind, and the whole thing was so offputting, to me, because of this constant drum beat about how my miserable life was going to be so much BETTER if I bought in.  and the thing is, for me, my life is so far from miserable.  I bought holosync, not to change my life, but out of pure scientific curiosity.  and while using it, I have been trying to see changes in myself over time.  a very subjective process.  I can't report any life changing results yet, but maybe that's only supposed to happen to people who are miserable to start with??   no matter, I still use holosync because I enjoy it and I do various breathing exercises and mantras while listening.

i just want to tell people that the BIG secret that all these people are selling is available for free.  you don't have to buy a bunch of programs to be happy.  you really don't have to buy anything to be happy as a clam.  for me, looking around to see what's already perfect and savouring it is part of the magic.

I've actually heard bill harris say so himself, just not when he's trying to sell something.

and I don't think it's inherently wrong to try and sell anything.  I just reserve the right to say thanks but no thanks as I did in my blog post…

“and right now, I'm grateful for the ability to say thanks, but no thanks.  and for the ability to be grateful for what I have right now instead of needing to buy access to someone else for my happiness, because that is really and truly a great gift and it's FREE.”

I don't envy bill harris in any way.  and I don't think that questioning or rejecting his offer of spending time with him for $30,000 a year is evidence of my own insecurity.  it's also not the black and white game, but it is a game– it's my own game of questioning and pointing out the opposite of what the slick advertising will tell you.  gemstar said that she copies bill's ad copy because she sees how effective it is.  effective in what way though?  it sells something.  it creates need or demand where there previously wasn't any.  that's what MOST advertising does.  and I think it is valuable to question the advertising.  advertising has become the social norm and I think it is valuable to question whether is is adding to the quality of life or harming it.

larry – did you check out the growth busters link in the original post??  here's one to ad to that…   http://www.adbusters.org/

speaking of questioning and changing cultural paradigms…..   ever played the blue eyes, brown eyes experiment??  or been subject to it.  it's an eye opener.  I was subject to it in middle school and I think it taught me a great deal about judgements and filters and questioning what's being sold, whether the selling is through cultural norms or social acceptableness or through actual advertising.  I think you'll agree that we need to question.  discernment and the ability to change our filters at will is one of the great gifts we are given.  and I do understand that some people's filters are more deeply ingrained than others and that it takes more work and more practice to change those filters for some than for others.  I was somehow blessed (some might say cursed) with the ability to see a thing from many sides but I actually think it was a learned behavior and that it becomes easier with practice.

you say…..
activities that I'd like to participate in that cost more money than I have can at times, if I let them, trigger my victim consciousness of lack”

and ”I want more”.

may I offer this…..  the wanting of more is quite possibly the direct result of living in a society saturated with advertising.  is that possible??

my suggestion and my reply to bill was a tongue in cheek commentary about the idea that any of us needs “more” and that all of us could stand to really take the time to enjoy and care for what we already have.

some song said, “when you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with”.  and that snippet has been serving me more and more well.  it works with stuff too…. “when you can't have the stuff you think you want, love the stuff you already have.”

look with new eyes.  beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  i've found that to be a deep truth.  and one that gives me a deep sense of peace and feeling of connectedness.  it doesn't have to be your truth, but I share it as an offering of joy.

oh – and here's the study that showed that we tend to overvalue income as a measure of happiness.  I think you might enjoy it.
http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S15/15/09S18/index.xml?section=topstories

if you read between the lines of that study and think about how much advertising most people are subject to in this day and age, most of which is designed to convince you that you will be happier and/or better if you possess or use such and such thing, you might be able to extrapolate how we got such a skewed perception of income to happiness in the first place.

and in your last paragraph you thank bill for giving you spiritual food for change and opportunity.  i thank bill's email for giving me some blog fodder.  ;-)   you'll notice my nickname on my profile page is “pliable provocateur”.  I think it fits today.

SFL,
Thank you for your clarifications.

And…my wanting more is mostly in reference to wanting more money to meet basic needs right now. It's like not having any food in the refrig and wanting more food to fill it. Many of the basics for me are not being met yet I can still focus on the fact that there is still much good (and much worthwhile) in my life.

And actually what I am going through is worthwhile yet difficult.

Thanks again for all your insights. I'll check out the adbusters.

Hello Dawn, I would have never known about Bill Harris’ special offer if you hadn’t written this blog, since I immediately dump his emails into trash, but…. I wonder if he got anyone to go for it?

And I also started wondering if I could get folks to pay me big bucks to hang out with me in my living room and have telephone access.

Do I have too much spare time to wonder? <giggle, giggle, snort>
