New Year, New Day, New Dawn, New Life for Me......  Yeah.

Life as work of art.

first -- turn any and every complaint into gratitude.  look for the silver lining in every single situation.  say thank you.  and then say it again.  and again.  and again.  and again.

say I love you.  often.  let it float on the air.   feel it, even when you don't say it out loud.  and then go ahead and say it out loud.

let yourself laugh.  let yourself be light.  let yourself smile.  be pleased about your smile.

have discipline.  be the kind of girl who is disciplined enough to achieve my goals.  when there is a challenge, when something is hard, do it anyway and ease into letting it be easy.

example:
complaint-- "Oh, (whine) I have to go to work today.  I don't want to go to work today."
turn it into--  "I am so thankful that I have a job to go to that pays me well and that I enjoy most of the time."

just those thoughts, even unspoken, can change the way the beginning of my day feels.  :-)

example:
complaint-- "my muscles are sore from exercising three days in a row and I have lost so much strength and flexibility in the past couple of months."
turn it into-- "I am so tickled that I have enough money to be able to have a monthly unlimited membership to the yoga studio nearest my home.  I am so thankful that it is never too late to start rebuilding strength and flexibility."  "I am so thankful that I can find a place in my home where I can practice backbends, handstands and other yoga postures to open up my hips and heart."

Goal -- I will be able to do a rock solid, fully kicked out standing bow posture by Valentine's Day 2009.  even with my eyes closed.

Goal -- I will weigh 137 lbs or less by Valentine's Day 2009.  I will maintain that weight for the rest of my life.  I will eat healthy, small portions.

Goal -- I will be able to see by own toes in floor Bow pose by Valentine's Day 2009.

i want to be healthy, wealthy, wise and happy.  and I want to share that with my family, friends and the whole world.

Goal -- I will speak, hear, read & write Spanish well enough to be a certified translator by the end of 2009.  In 2010 I will work on another language.

Goal -- I would like to have a Canon 5D Mark II camera and 2 nice lenses before Farland and I embark on our trip to NYC this year.

Goal -- I will send Jordan the word of the day email everyday, and I will use the word of the day in a sentence.

Goal -- I would like to start selling my photographs at a stock photography site.  By July 2009.

I would like for our home to be an incredibly green, wonderfully welcoming sanctuary.

Intention -- I will spend my savasana of every yoga class saying a prayer for my mom to be healthy, wealthy and wise and HAPPY.  and I will extend that prayer to everyone on the planet.  starting with those nearest and dearest to me first.

Goal -- I will lower my overall and bad cholesterol by eating oatmeal, walnuts, flaxseeds, cinnamon everyday.  I will help my digestive system by doing Bikram yoga a minimum of 3 days per week and eating plenty of fiber including black beans.  I will eat yogurt (for calcium) and acidophillus (for digestive tract health) everyday too.

Wish -- I would like to do some cross country skiing this year.

Wish -- I would like to find time to walk my dogs, with my husband, every single day this year.  Even if only once around the pond.

Goal -- Get all my taxes done before the end of January 2009.

Goal -- Get at least 3 months living expense into savings and then never ever take it out of savings or use it for anything except emergencies.  Travel, school and other things will have to be saved over and above that goal.  (Perhaps have different accounts for these things.)

Say yes to teaching yoga and do your best at it.  Go to as many yoga meetings as you can, but don't feel bad if you can't make it to one.  Be your best.  Share your strengths with your students and learn from them too.  Giving to the yoga community by teaching will help your own practice.  Yoga is a community.  Let it be an expansive one.  No one else can walk your life path.  It is uniquely yours.  Don't try to walk someone else's path either.  Cherish the path you are walking.  In interstellar time, it is but a moment and no other life will be exactly like it.

On Valentine's Day 2009 i will ask Adam to take my picture while doing a perfect Standing Bow pose and wearing the top hat my brother gave me.

complaint:  Adam is jealous and whiny about me having too much fun or interacting with other men or other people too much, or reading too much, or blogging too much, or doing yoga too much.
turn it into:  isn't it wonderful to have a husband who wants to spend time with me?
and next time he complains.  give him my undivided attention until he cries uncle.  :-)

Weekly time management:

there are 168 hours in a week.

working at APCCC uses up approximately 40 of them.  when I am at work I will work, work and work.  it will be a joy to do the best work possible.
168 - 40 = 128

commuting uses a little less than 8 hours a week.  if I take the bus I can read, listen to people speaking spanish, listen to coffee break spanish lessons, meditate or just relax during those hours.  sometimes I have great conversations with interesting people on the bus too.
128 - 8 = 120

if I sleep 7 hours a night that would add up to 49 hours per week.  sometimes I like to sleep a little longer because I am having interesting dreams, but when I am doing yoga regularly I tend to sleep less because I am less tired.
120 - 49 = 71

yoga -- I am making a commitment right now to do a minimum of 3 Bikram yoga classes a week.  from leaving home til returning home most Bikram yoga classes take about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.  During that 7 hours a week, I will pray/meditate, build strength, stretch, build flexibility, put gorgeous brush stroke into this work of art called life.  2.25 x 3 = 6.75
71 - 7 = 64

walking -- I want to walk, outside of doors, every, single day for at least half an hour.  sometimes this wil be done on my lunch break at work, with my camera in hand, and other days it will be at home.  walking is a wonderful meditation, so good for body, mind and soul.  1/2 hour x 7 = 3.5 hours
64 - 3.5= 60.5

kundalini yoga too -- 1 hour, once a week.  (the time getting there and back home will be included in my commuting to work or walking time since this class is on the way home from work, sort of)
60.5 - 1 = 59.5

spanish lessons -- I have already made a commitment to really learn Spanish this year.  I think it would be wisest to commit to 1 hour at least 4 days per week.  using rosetta stone this will be 2 days for new lessons and 2 days for test and review.  I don't want to do this halfway.  I want to really learn this subject right and well and deeply.
59.5 - 4 = 55.5

meditation with holosync -- because I have already committed to 4 yoga classes a week (3 Bikram, 1 Kundalini) and because my walking and yoga are meditations, I will not try to fit in holosync meditations everyday.  my life is happiest, I am happiest and my loved ones are happiest when I have a balance of work, practice, study and play.  to that end I will plan for 3 days of 1 hour holosync meditations per week.
55.5 - 3 = 52.5

this is a rough draft, a beginning.  a though process.  it needs to be refined and polished and tweeked.

right now, I've just finished yoga for the second day in a row and my muscles were aching the first day because of doing some crazy biggest loser video with my roommate which involved zillions of lunges and some famous (not to me) guy named bob.  and the days before that I did jumping jacks until I was exhausted.  so now I'm goiing to bed.........

almost -- more thoughts on time management.  this was prompted by a desire to create balance and organization, not rigidity, so this is a fluid plan and even though it's ambitious and I may have bitten off more than I can chew, it's ok.

more things that I absolutely make time for:

library / reading
blogging / writing / & reading blogs
making art - postcards, boxes & photos
hiking
cross country skiing
do nothing except what I absolutely want to do at that very moment time
gardening
making my home into a wonderfully welcoming sanctuary
volunteering
writing letters to various powers that be and / or editors
paperwork / bill paying -- the dreaded paperwork -- how to turn that from a complaint into a gratitude??  -- oh here it is -- be thankful that I have the money to pay the bills, even a little at a time.
film / play / comedy / live music time
hang out with husband and laugh time
bath time
cooking and having people over for great conversation / friends & family time
travel
teaching yoga too

these are actually, truly all things that lift my spirits.  how does anyone in this big world actually get bored???

ok everybody -- comment away -- but remember -- this is only a rough draft and it's completely uneditted.

night night.

(I thought about leaving this private in case I can't do all these things, but I read that you should always bite off more than you can chew if you want to live an epic life -- and I liked that advice, so I'm going for it.  yeah.  :-) )

Hmmm, I’ve accumulated a whopping two resolutions: to bring more color into my life and to keep the kitchen sink empty. Maybe I should think bigger.

Dairy isn’t your best source of calcium. Stay away from animal protein and take vitamin D (D3, not D2) 5000iu’s a day in the winter. In the summer get your skin in the sun for half an hour or so a day without sunscreen or else take vitamin D year round. Even if you’re outside a lot in the winter too much skin is covered to synthesize vitamin D. Eat bok choy and greens and tofu and broccoli for calcium, you’ll do much better than with yogurt. Don’t take antibiotics and you won’t need the acidophilus, and if you have high enough levels of vitamin D you won’t get sick very often at all so you’ll rarely need antibiotics anyway.

Oh, I nearly forgot the most important thing:   I love you Dawn!

oh  my  god   you take my breath away dawn, what a draft indeed! Your level of energy & your ability to break down your wheel of life into such organized slices makes the coach in me go weeee!!  I really really like how you distinguish between goals & wishes, making your intentions so very specific. And yes, I’m a lil envious too cuz this year my list must be kept at a bare minimum not to get overwhelmed & doing that is a challenge in itself tsk. My focus is on regaining absolute health so much of what you are looking into, resonates with me as well…my toes & nose haven’t met for quite a while now & I’m eagerly awaiting (anticipating with trepidation) the reunion. I’m in awe of the abundance of projects you have ongoing & I’ll be rooting for you to tweak & polish this into a marvelous plan for 09.  oh..& I’ll second Jeannie on the vit D, calcium, keeping the sink empty & loving you bit <3

Yeah, I’m sittin’ here breathless too, LightGrrl!  When you finish all that wonderful stuff, do you think you’ll still have time to come over and shovel snow for me once in a while?  Like today, maybe?

The only thing that I saw that I might think about was the tax thing.  April 15th is 3 and 1/2 months away: Fifteen weeks.  Getting this year’s tax in on time and making an effort on those back taxes will go a long way towards mollifying the TaxMan.  The IRS WILL work with a taxpayer, but I do not think that they are infinitely patient and forgiving like you and me.

Dawn, I was working on my list yesterday too. I thought I might be a bit too ambitious but girl, I got nothing on you! But your plans are all of a piece – a healthy life seems to be the theme running through it all, whether that means (1) balance between all the parts of your life, expansion of knowledge by learning a language, and expression of what you’re going through in blogs (a healthy mind), (2) yoga, walking, and weight maintenance (a healthy body), and (3) a sense of gratitude and love (a healthy heart). So even if you don’t get to all the things on your list as often as you want, the net result will still  be a healthy life.

I am so impressed by your optimism and energy … it almost makes me think I should try to write another list like I did almost a decade ago …

Eight years ago, I wrote ten “intentions” for my life in the last half hour before the year 2000 became the year 2001. They set in motion so many events which were evolutionary, but really overwhelming sometimes. My body changed. My marriage changed. My husband changed careers… . it was a year of intense emotions, physical pain and revelations. It was all for the best… . but since then, I have been a little “gun-shy” about making another list like that. I am going to post them and the journal entry I made a few weeks afterI wrote themon my blog today. It’s a good thing to revisit them today, and your entry here got that ball rolling. Thanks for the inspiration, Dawn!

jeannie – i will take your advice about calcium – meaning I’ll have to learn how to cook bok choy and remember to buy (and eat) broccolie more often.  i hardly ever get sick as it is.  and what’s the best source of vitamin d – no food sources?

tara – you have taken my breath away with your beautiful writing so many times. I’m glad I could take yours away one way or another.

mage – is it snowing there again?  we’re having a brief respite after a christmas week that was just silly with snow.  it’s all melty during the day now and super duper slick at night.  and you are right about the tax man or woman as the case may be.  I’m getting them done early this year!!

lil (tracy in green on facebook - lol) – you are right.  healthy is what I want to be.  healthy, wealthy, wise and happy.

laura – thank you thank you thank you.  I wish you the perfect same.

otter — i can’t wait to go read that.  it sounds fascinating.  I have done similar things before.  and thank YOU for the endless inspiration that you always offer on your blog.

I’m still polishing and rethinking the above post.  I want to thank you all for stopping by and share this piece of stuff I just found in my inbox (see below) which is also helping me to wrap my head about this new year and resolution idea.

I can’t even say how much the love and support of my gaia friends, who are all super heros with special powers in my mind, has meant to me over these years since my very first blog post on zaadz

   Hello Dawn,

   It’s that time again!

Maybe like you, I subscribe to quite a number of newsletters.
One thing’s for sure, this time of year many of these emails
will talk about New Year’s Resolutions.

Love them or hate them, call ‘em what you like there IS
something very symbolic to turning over a new year or starting
a new calendar. For many it is almost as if they start from
  scratch (AGAIN).

For this reason it is worth finding a way to harness the power
of positive intention. So rather than lamenting another moment
going by where precious little happens, you can back up your
intentions with real action that will have you enjoying your
  successes.

In this way you can transform your resolutions from simple
WISHES to real outcomes that bring you more of what you want in
  your life.

  Choose your moment
As I said, often these resolutions are made with the best of
  intentions.

You do have to pick your moment and maybe even mark the
process with something meaningful or even ceremonial. You could
for example, sit down in some kind of quiet or meditative spot
by the sea or in a forest or maybe your favorite room or
  location.

You could go for a cleansing walk, do something positive like
write your thoughts down. It really isn’t that surprising that
if you set your intention during a night of celebration after a
couple of drinks that disappointment will likely ensue. Do you
really want to make another resolution only to have it fail and
  be disappointed?

   No one does.

So why do so many of these things fall by the wayside almost
the moment they are uttered? What can you do to make your
resolution worth focusing your attention on for more than the
time it took to say it?

Resolutions are only as powerful as you make them. And they
  take some work!

Change is … doing more of what works
I often tell people of a fabulous life philosophy that really
works. The work of Humberto Maturana really resonates for me.
Here it is summarized within a very simply statement:

If you keep on doing what works, then the stuff that doesn’t
  work will simply fall away.

Do what works and those habits, actions and behaviors will
stay and the elements that don’t work will be eradicated from
the ‘system’. You are not trying to change things that don’t
  work.

Nature will take care of the change if you focus on conserving
  what works.

Incremental intention works and can start with your yoga
  practice
Have you ever ‘set your intention’ in class before you
  practice yoga?

   These are mini-resolutions.

Hey, even getting to class is one of those. And just like
having a regular and frequent practice to get results, so too
do you need to continue some kind of re-commitment to your
cause when you resolve to make some changes in your life.

In other words, you can’t go to one single yoga class and
expect that you have done your exercise for your entire life
and that your class was sufficient to transform you into that
calm centered person you always wanted to be!

Let’s illustrate this with a ridiculous scenario: Your
intention to go to a yoga class is useless if you don’t
actually go! I told you that was silly - but still commonsense.

You can’t get to where you want to be without actually DOING
  something!

A new year’s resolution can be the same: we call that a
‘nominalization’ where the ‘resolution’ appears to exist
outside of yourself. It may be something you have conceived of
and named but in and of itself it IS nothing, just a word:

Example? ‘Relationship’. You cannot actually have a
relationship you can only be ‘relating’ with someone or
something else. It’s what you are doing in any moment that
makes your ‘relatING’ succeed or not.

   YOU give it the power.

Similarly there is no such thing as a yoga practice, only what
you are practicING. And as you know that can change from class
to class and day to day.

In the next couple of days I’ll share with you a formula we
use to transform mere goals into real life outcomes – AND how
you can use your yoga practice to get there!

Hey Dawn.  Do you do New Years resolution lists on commission?  I’d be glad to pay.  I keep coming up with things like “Keep doing what I’m doing only get it right this year.”  Not too imaginative on my part.

I love your list.  And “this is only a rough draft and it’s completely uneditted…?”  ROFLMAO … ;-)

i don’t think I would be very good at making resolutions for other people.  they’d get mad at me, say I expect too much, or don’t have any idea who they really, deeply are.  i can be unreasonably demanding– I’ve been trying to be less so over the years.  giving myself a break seems to help me give others a break now and then too.  :-)

I think you said said the same thing as me, but more poetically and with less words.  :-)  ““Keep doing what I’m doing only get it right this year.”   for me it’s keep trying again and again and again until I get it right and then see what else I can beging to keep trying again and again and again until I get it right.  :-)

and this….
“this is only a rough draft and it’s completely uneditted…?”
wasn’t a joke!!  (mock outrage)

for some reason your comment inspired me to take this photo and post it here.  the mini sculpture on the left was given to me by my wonderful mom who said it just kept yelling “dawn” at her, so she had to give it to me.  i got the glittery green candle at the white elephant gift exchange that we did as a family on christmas eve this year.  the lit candle with words I bought as a gift for my sister and I was jealous that she had one and not me, so I bought one for myself too.  it’s a good reminder.  these are all right in front of me as I type right now.

Dawn, I’m so sorry your home had to go through such a frightening episode. How lucky Aspen is to have you – body and spirit – looking out for them. You spend a lot of time helping heal others (I tried the asana you recommended to Tara on a different post cuz you mentioned it was good for headaches – i’ve had one for about 20 hours but it is much lessened after doing the half tortoise). make sure you take some time to heal your own psyche after such a tense time at work.

Lil – you are sweet.  Being on Gaia heals me.  and yesterday I had a very nice dinner with Adam when he was done with work at our favorite Nepalese Restaurant (which is where we went 6 + years ago on our very first non date and for a million different reasons since then.)  tonight I walked with my friend Dyani who also works at 911 for a half hour as the sun set.  It was beautiful.  I’m just putting the photos on flickr now.  I’ll link later.

I’m so glad the half tortoise helped you.  I love that pose!!
