I like Jeannie's answer; JOY. yes. yes. it's true.
reason #2 for riding my bike home from work: I feel joyful, energetic, happy, peaceful, while riding my bike.
excuse: but it might rain today. the clouds are looming. the rain looks imminent.
elegant solution?: I'm not made of sugar (really, I'm not), I won't melt. I did ride my bike home. It did rain. It felt wonderful. elegant solution(!): get wet! don't just get wet. ENJOY getting wet.
:-)
this photo is from my camera phone-- 3 and a half miles from work, 14 miles from home. it's right next to the bike path. I stopped and put some water on my head when I was feeling hot.

mmm good thing you are not made of sugar… all the sweetness would be lying in the pool :) hugs
What a great bike ride! I have such a totally urban biking environment, but it's good in different ways. I get to see lots of odd people and funny gardens with found objects and cool artwork and I can stop and check out the cool little shops that I would just drive past because there's no parking available most of the time and I'm just going too fast in my car. I would love to have a place to put water on my head with a big rock that looks kind of like a bear sitting down on its haunches, but I don't have that. I've been trying to figure out if I'm allowed to pick up my 9 year old client on my bike - no one seems to know if that passes our company's liability policy. Apparently no one has asked that before…
Beautiful water and rocks!
nicole, did you ever do that experiment as a kid where you dissolve as much sugar in heated water as possible and then put a string hanging down into the water and as the water cools the sugar collects on the string like candy? I don't know why I thought of it when I read your comment. :-)
jeannie! – you have to see this…. xtracycle the guy at the gear exchange in glenwood springs, colorado showed me his cool xtracycle which he has put 1000 + miles on. he said he gives his friends rides with it and he carries all his gear with it and apparently it's very, very safe and stable and he's even put two full recycle bins on either side and taken the recycles to the recycle place on his bike. he used a kit to convert his old bike to an xtracycle. I want one!! but it doesn't work on full suspension mtn bikes. grrr. I might be dreaming of one of these for next year or maybe I'll get a trailer for my groceries.
and I didn't see the bear in the photo before, but now I do. thanks. now my bike ride will even be better. :-)
you should point out that bikes are much, much safer than cars. I'm sure you could find some statistics to support that somewhere?? do they have bike safety classes for kids there? our police department in conjunction with the schools puts on a “bike rodeo” each year for the kids to learn about bicycle safety. quite fun! :-)
emma– I agree!
