“There's a graveyard in northern France where all the dead boys from D-Day are buried. The white crosses reach from one horizon to the other. I remember looking it over and thinking it was a forest of graves. But the rows were like this, dizzying, diagonal, perfectly straight, so after all it wasn't a forest but an orchard of graves. Nothing to do with nature, unless you count human nature.” - Barbara Kingsolver
Yes, It would take a change in perspective. The young men in the graves of which she speaks were not the aggressors - they were simply defending countries which were being over-run. Until that part of human nature evolves - that part which wants to dominate and “have all the toys in the sand-box” - we will have people making war, and others who will have to defend themselves. I ask myself, if someone broke into my house, tried to burn it to the ground, raped myself and my daughters, killed my husband and kidnapped my son - as has been the case recently in places like the Sudan, etc. how would I react? How easy would it be to sit still and take it? I hope I never have to find that out. I wish these people had a “karma meter” where their belly-button is. Then, when they began to do something which violates another, they could see the karma they're accumulating. It could glow red and even make a loud sound like a car alarm gone wild. And, the meter would not shut off until they stop their harmful action. Instant Karma on steroids.
james I heart/mind you back. :-)
and catherine you are brilliant. I wonder what we can do to help each other listen to our internal karma meters. I know that mine works better sometimes than others. if I work on my own karma meter is that good enough to help the whole world? or is there something I can do to help others tune into their own karma meters? this is a question I often ask myself and waver about the answer.
Sweet. Simple. Right. Yes!
albert, your mere pressence makes me feel like a better human being. you remind me to be better. and you too actually catherine. and you too james. I think that's why I come to gaia- to get reminded to be the best me I can?
