When was the last time you really listened to someone?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 24, 2008:
It's my job to listen. I listen to tones of voice and inflection and words. I listen to subtleties and gross exagerations. I have to listen fast. That seems like a contradiction, but it doesn't have to be. After listening and responding for 10 hours at work today I went to the library and listened with my eyes. I spent 3 and a half luxurious hours in the library feeding my huge appetite for so many subjects. It was oh so quiet in the library. What a wonderful counterpoint to my day at the 9-1-1 dispatch center. So much knowledge and experience and wit and wisdom residing in those shelves and such lovely words all strung together to make something more than themselves. As I read from a stack of 15 or 20 books I'd not quiet randomly pulled from the shelves I jotted down words in my notebook with a pencil. Here are a few of the words I heard with my eyes and savored:

I've been listening to something deeper than the surface of the pages of all those books. when I put the words back together in a different order than I found them I may find a magical or mysterious message?????
the photo is from my iPhone at lunch when my ears were full of recorded rain and bells and my eyes were full of sky and sunshine and shadow and my hands were manipulating pencil and paper and my little world was wondrous peaceful for about 55 minutes before reentering the fray of a busy communications center.

words are so scrumptious! hugs
all these gorgeous words – i want to put them in a big pile on the floor and roll around in them!
Anais Nin made lists of her favorite words too. I think she would have liked all of these.
howdy grrls. thanks for sharing more good words….
nicole hugs back to you, you scrumptious person you.
and gorgeous lil, what a great idea! let's do it!
and my favorite rapunzel of all time, I do like the way Anais Nin used words. I think she made me like some of those words. :-)
I was reading from, among many others, these:
“a blue hand, the beats in india”
”dancing in the streets, a history of collective joy”
”only love can break your heart” by david samuels
”against the machine, being human in the age of the electronic mob” by Lee Siegel
”i have fun everywhere I go” by Mike Edisonso
”helping me help myself” by beth lisick
”bastard tongues: A Trail-Blazing Linguist Finds Clues to Our Common Humanity in the World's Lowliest Languages ” by derek bickerton
”the go-giver” by bob burg & john david mann
and oh yes…. ”vera wang on weddings” made me smile.
and I checked out, ”the kazdin method for parenting the defiant child with no pills, no therapy, no contest of wills” by alan e. kazdin, phd
and there were so many others I wanted to read every word of. I'm going to spend some more time in the library soon. what sanctuary and adventure and joy and peace! wouldn't it be nice if we could spend as much time as we wanted in the cool arms of a good library??
Great word list… really love Butterfly Flight Plan. This is inspiring, makes me want to look more deeply into things today.
Love the words Dawn, and I'm gogo for DLil's idea of dumping and rolling.
Dawn, a found pome or pomes for sure. and what a list of titles. goddarn it.
donny – I think my travels through the library, if not life, are sort of like the flight of a butterfly. thank you for your words.
I'm imagining moby dick rolling round in an ocean of fish shaped words with a few harpoon shaped words at the moment thanks you you and lil. :-)
laura – you made me look up pome. thank you for the gift of a new word friend. a tasty one too. :-)
I love this party / converstaion / community / classroom called gaia and all of you teachers / companions / friends / boat mates.

Yaaarrrrr! Avast!
There you go again, making me look up words.
avast
I probably ought to know that one by now, but no….
yaaaarrrrrrrr. I don't think that's one is to be found at www.dictionary.com
Oh, everyone please observe Talk Like a Pirate Day this year, it's September 19. I like to dress like a pirate too. And watch Johnny Depp.
adam plays the pirates movies at least several times a week as background noise so he can fall asleep, those or harry potter or lord of the rings. I'm think I could act out all of those movies, all the parts, alone. my subsconscious is savvy for sure. :-)
Jeannie - Oh goody. I'll swash my buckle 9/19 too! Especially if I get to watch JD.
Ya got a good man there Dawn. I like is viewing selection.
I'll remember that good man part before next time I grumble, 'do we have to listen to THAT one again?” or before I make 'im walk the plank. :-)
Off with 'is aitch!!!
