T Boone Pickens speaks at the Aspen Insitute.   Mr. Pickens is a Texas oilman, a billionaire who contributed quite a large sum to help swiftboat John Kerry in a past election and who now is touting a plan to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil using wind energy and natural gas.  He's recently met with John McCain and Barack Obama, according to the article.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of Mr. PIckens, but his plan (www.pickensplan.com) does seem to make some sense and it makes me feel hopeful in a cautious kind of way.

Foreign oil is a weird term to me.  Also - living in Western Colorado which is "rich" in natural gas -- I'd hate to see more and more gas drilling at the expense of wildlife and wild, undisturbed places.

I heard him interviewed a while back and I was impressed with his ideas…but as Pickens himself says, his plan is a stopgap to get us through the next 20 or 30 years and into other solutions. The biggest problem is going to be how unwilling people are to believe that things will actually have to change. The chain of human survival is only as strong as its dumbest links in some ways. That redneck guy down the street with the rustic looking chop shop in his yard who likes to drive up and down the road in front of my house squealing his tires and leaving streaks of black rubber on the road, he's killing all of us and he doesn't care one bit. I personally think gas has to be so expensive that he and people like him will be priced out of at least that particular area of stupidity. Clean, cheap sources of energy are certainly what we need to be working toward, but we also need to change behaviors and mindsets about how we use energy in the first place.

here here!!!   that's why I never complain about the price of gas.  I'd like to see it really reflect the cost to the environment (although that isn't actually why the prices are high at the moment.)
