What new ideas are bubbling in you these days?

Going back to school.  It's not exactly a new idea for me, but it's been seriously bubbling this spring and beginning of summer.  I attended the high school graduation of a family friend a couple of weeks ago.  She is going off to college in the fall on a full 4 year scholarship.  I'm so proud of her and hopeful.  My son just finished his first semester of college.  I have accrued enough college credit so far in my life to have about 1/4 of an associates degree.  I sat down with a college counselor two weeks ago to discuss working toward a degree.  I have tentatively decided to work on an Associate Degree in Arts and Humanities and then potentially transfer those credits to a University and do.....????  But now all of the sudden the Associate of Sciences degree looks terribly intriguing.

Today I rode my bike about 15 or 16 miles to the college.  Took a bunch of placement tests and then a Kundalini Yoga class.  I tried to enroll in the class that was supposed to start tomorrow called "Integrative Sustainable Design" but it was cancelled due to lack of enrollment.  Then I rode my bike the 15 or 16 miles home, getting here just before full dark.  The sunset was glorious.

The bubbling in me has to do with sustainability.  Living lightly on the planet.  Enjoying as many moments as possible while contributing something meaningful.  Tonight I thought about Albert Einstein and how he said he thought of the theory of relativity while riding his bike.

I'm going to do my Spanish lesson now, in the hopes that I can test into an intermediate level Spanish class in the fall, instead of starting in a beginning class.

Einstein and his buds talked about the “three B's” - bed, bath and bus - which was where they noticed that all their breakthrough ideas happened. I think bicycle would make four B's. I've been fascinated by this for years because, although I'm no Einstein, I totally experience that phenomenon of stewing over a problem and then letting it go and doing something else relatively mind-freeing and having a new solution to the problem pop in. Where does it come from? No new information, same brain as before, suddenly new connections and understanding spring out of…somewhere. Cool. Need more of that.

It's good to get the degree if only to guarantee that your credits then won't expire just in case you want to use them later. Mine all died of old age a while ago.

Open space and high heels and Dawn riding her bike filled with ideas ( this image imprinted in my mind) the image all the more poignant bc she walks the walk or pedals the pedals or something, and yes to the forth B,and learning which I do believe is a guarantee to never become old, in the other sense of the word.

How on earth do credits expire,I think we should get credits just for trying, just for doing things to our best ability.

I have such a grin on my face right now having just read these three comments.  and tears of appreciation for friendship welling in my eyes.

it just rained outside and i can see the sunshine on the mountain now.  the outside is mirroring my inside.  :-)

oh yes – bed, bath, bus, bicycle – I get ideas in all of these  B places.  i also get them from my many G's (gais, grrrls).  :-)

adam has just left on a mission to get dog food, a rack for my bike so I don't have to carry everything on my back when riding, headlight and taillight for my bike because I sometimes dawdle and he wants me to be safe when riding home in the dark and he's sick of me borrowing his headlight and then to the shoe repair shop to get my old flip flops repaired so I don't have to spend money on a new pair.  he says I'm terribly spoiled, but he says it with such a twinkle in his eye and smirk on his face that I get the idea he doesn't mind doing all my errands while I write an essay that is due tomorrow.

I'm astonished that credits expire as well.  I'm glad I'm getting back to work on it now then.  Yesterday was fun.  I met people from all walks of life in my “Academic Achievement” class.  It's a single credit class where you take placement tests, brush up on the skills you've gotten rusty in and get back into the swing of things; sort of a college orientation.  There was a woman about 10 years older than me from Asia, just getting started with English, a girl from Brazil about my age, a bunch of young girls working on their GED's and a boy who was just about Jordan's age and just as whipsmart and smartalecky.  He's my favorite at the moment, of course.  We were having a class discussion on rights and responsibilities and I said how lovely it would be if we had a book like the student handbook that laid out one's rights and responsibilities in a larger context and the teacher said- like for being a citizen in a town and I said- yes, or like for being a citizen of a state, a nation or of our world and the young man said- yes, wouldn't that be cool and the teacher reminded me that there is indeed already a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and I said- oh yeah, that's true and the young man was flabergasted and wanted to know more.  So I wrote it down for him and gave him this web address….

www.theelders.com

but I should have given him this one…

www.thelders.org

and this one…

www.everyhumanhasrights.org

the one I gave him in error goes to a band's website.  oh well. I'll see him tomorrow in class and give him the correct one.  and I think I'll print out the declaration and bring it with me to class.

all this just to say— I am already having WAY too much fun in college.  :-)

now I have to go write an essay or adam might be irritated that he did all my errands for me while I just played.  :-)

thank you three g's (gais, grrrls) for coming over to play.  I adore you, value you, have even come to depend on you for something intangible and essential– inspiration, friendship, a sense of belonging.  what a pleasure to be interdependent with the likes of you all.  I love you.

xoxo
